A friend's tradition continued...

Every year since I was Bennett's age I have gone to Lake Chelan State Park for 10 days each summer. We have pictures of me at 3 being bathed in a garbage can (clean I am assuming) and swimming in the swimming area with childhood friends in my arm floaties... it is definitely the most important childhood memory of all of our childhoods.

When I was old enough to meet friends at school and have sleep overs my parents let me invite a friend to Chelan. I am not sure what year it was but my very first friend I invited was Jania. She has been my best friend since. At Chelan every summer we ate ice cream, went on the boat and met boys in our teen age years.
Since then we have both grown up, gone to college, met some grown up boys, got married (at nearly the same time) and had babies... and these babies may be the best part of our friendship.

This week we continued our summer tradition with a trip to Eastern Washington... Jania and Charli met us at the beginning of the trip in Orondo for a couple days and it was such a great way to get the camping started. Our babies are to the day 6 months apart.... Charli is a delight, She smiles and laughs with Bennett with such joy... we love her so much.
Jania and I were both terrified of how the kids would sleep in a small trailer with two cribs and a queen size bed... and to our amazement they did great. I actually think that Bennett slept better when she was here! I cant wait for so many more summers to come!!

Wonderful Wine Weekend

We all left home on June 25th to start the great summer road trip of 2010 and since then we have sadly been without internet connection (we would not be surviving without our 3G on our Iphones) But thank the lord we have hacked into the park connection and we are back up to blog... We have a little catching up to do.

We left bright and early on June 25th, 5:00 am to be exact. Anyone that knows my fathers vacation schedules would not at all be surprized. We drove 4 hours with Bennett strapped in back watching Shrek & his signing time movies. We arrived at Orondo River Park around noon to drop off the 2 trailers and the boat where they will stay until our return on Sunday. We left and started another leg to Richland in the afternoon and arrived at the 2 Annual Tincher Wine Tasting Weekend! Last year we couldn't go because Bennett was sick and we were thrilled to make it this year.
The weekend was a beautiful one full of wine, family and many babies... that is right we had 5 babies and Bennett was the oldest (not that he qualifies as a baby but since it was his first time there he made the cut). Bennett loved hanging with his cousin Lily the most. She flew in from Hawaii to surprize her Grandma and Grandpa and to Bennetts extreme delight... she loves to play chase!

Bennett has been using his sign language like crazy and loved showing off how he can say his first signed sentance "more cracker please" He does it really fast and if we dont hand over whatever we have he quickly gets frustrated and starts using all sorts of "please" and "more" while yelling... still pretty cute.

Tasting at the first of many Richland Wineries... Loved it!
The newest of the babies... Miss Violet Scott... What a sweetie and I was so happy to get a snuggle :)

Hiding and Jumping...

Bennett has been making smile since the day I found out I was pregnant... but lately it has changed to all out constant laughter. He is such a ham and just loves the encouragement.
Buddy, thank you for all the happiness you bring me and all the years of laughing this hard!

Here is a short video of him toddler jumping... hilarious!

Here is a video of him playing hide and seek last night...

Dear Dada,

It is your second Fathers Day and I love you so much,
We have been through a lot these last couple years. It took me so long to get here and you were there to hang out with Mama and be as supportive and optomistic as you could be. I needed Mama to be strong for me and I know you helped her.
I definately made my first year here memorable and tested all your fatherhood limits. I spent most of my time crying and you spent most of your time just loving me anyway. You were always proud of me even though being my Dad wasn't exactly like you had it all planned.
Now that I am feeling better you are patient with all my normal toddler craziness.  I hear you coming in at night and I yell one of the two words I truly know "DADA!" The only other word being "Doggie" who usually comes in with you, this makes for my favorite part of every day. I love that you do my bath every night... it is our specialy time to be guys and hang out. Being outside with you and the doggie is my favorite thing and I can't wait for the sun of summer so we can do it all day.
I am so lucky that you picked me to be your son and I hope that some day I grow up to be just like you. You are super fun, a great dada and couldn't make Mama happier.
Happy Fathers Day Dada, I love you,
Bennett

Shorts, Shapes and Sharing a Walmart Cart!

Bennett, his friend Charli and a new friend Baby Sammie took on Walmart today to do a little Fathers Day Shopping. We couldn't help but laugh at ourselves pushing this enormous cart around spilling of goodies and children. The kiddos had a blast and I wont lie, there was a little smooching going on in that double seat... thank you Charli!
There were some pretty good finds for the kids and the Dads. Bennett picked out a Radio Flyer Wagon for his Daddy for Fathers Day and we scored on these great plaid shorts for B. Who knew there were such good deals there?!
Bennett has been working hard on his shape box. It is one of his favorite things to play with and he has conquered the circle, square, rectangle and star with efficiency... He puts them in, waits for me to clap enthusiastically and dumps them out to go again. Such a show off!
Showing off those cute new shorts and his big open mouth smile!
Check out these shape box skills!

Summer Time!

Bennett has been loving the sunshine today! We played in the sprinkler but mostly just hung out with Daddy in the back yard helping out on a few things like mowing the lawn.
I keep on thinking that I have his little personality all figured out... and then he surprizes me with a new facial expression, new little waddle/run and new words. He is hilarious lately and could not be more fun. He has been picking up sign language like crazy and has added "cracker" and "drink" they are adorable and I love seeing him thinking it all through.
This kid got wet! He would run in like a war hero and then out to reorganize his attack!
Here he is getting after that lawn work...
B's new summer kicks... He looks so funny in these and shorts... man does this kid need to grow some ankles!

Always up for a good playdate!

Bennett had over his good friends Charli, Anthony, Jackson & their mommies. What a group they were! So fun! Charli (Jania & Tony's little one) is growing up so fast. She is exactly 6 months younger than Bennett and just turned 1 this past Monday... It is going to be so fun seeing them grow up together. It already looks like they will get along as good as their mommies do. Anthony and Jackson are just adorable and Bennett had a great time chasing them around, they were all so busy that it was hard to track them down with the camera :) The kids were even ALL dancing to Casper Babypants... pretty much the cutest think you will ever see.
We cant wait to see them all again.

A little like his Mama...

Grandma Ruth has been doing some photo archiving and sharing some pictures of her girls when we were little. We have always laughed at how my little guy looks a little like Grandma's little girl.
He is looking more and more like Joel everyday and thank goodness I had a bit more hair than Bennett does.
Maybe this is why mommies always think their kids are the cutest of them all...

More sunshine please...

Bennett and I spent the weekend down in Chehalis because Joel is Golfing with the guys in Eastern Washington (Happy 35th Birthday Joel!). We had a great weekend soaking up some sunshine with Grandma & Grandpa and Auntie Katie & Cousin Reece. We tried out some life jackets in the hot tub trying to find a perfect fit for the boat this year. We spent a lot of time day dreaming of our three week vacation to Chelan coming up... I have been there every summer since I was Bennett's age and this is our first time to go since I was pregnant. I can't wait to see him grow up sharing the same memories that I grew up with.

We even snuck in some time at Bennett's Cousin Maddie's softball game. Bennett really enjoyed watching all the kids, games and the girls making icecream after the game...
Watching Maddie's team win the game!
I so wish I could blame this outfit on anyone but me but we didnt realize we would be spending most of the weekend and it was this or his construction pajamas paired with aqua socks...
My froggy life jacket! He doesn't mind wearing it as long as he doesn't get deep enough to actually make him float... the search for the perfectly cute & safe jacket is still on.

School is out for Summer!

Usually we would be excited for the freedom of summer... but in the case of Bennett's weekly Toddler Group we are so sad. Bennett has only been part of school since March but he has grown to fit in and love every second. We will miss all the kiddos, parents and especially the teachers this summer. Toddler group starts back up in September and he will be able to be part of it until he turns 3. Lots of fun to look forward to for the next 18 months!
One very special teacher will not be teaching next year... We will miss you Teacher Tammy!

Tonight was the end of school year toddler BBQ. It was fun to have Joel there to meet some of the other parents and kids. As always we had a blast seeing Bennet interact with all the other kids, parents and teachers.

And then the kiddos found a box...

Rainy Park Time!

We took the kids to the park this afternoon to let Hurlie swim... Bennett was way too interested in the water and got ankle deep with his tennis shoes on...
"Throw the ball, throw the ball, throw the ball...."

Another Day with the Cousins...

We went down and spent Saturday at Grandma & Grandpa Jones' house with ALL the cousins. Grandma & Grandpa got us these cool chairs to sit on the back deck with when it is finally sunny out this summer... but we took them for a spin in the living room. Everyone loved their chair but someone had to be bribed with a cracker to sit still for a picture (I bet you can guess who).
Little Evie practicing "Hey Reece, can you pass me a juice box?"
Little Miss Evie...
Our friends Erin & Jason brought their two little ones, Claire and Cole. All the kiddos played so well together.
Bennett sure loves chasing Grandma & Grandpas kitty... And they meet again....

Childrens Museum

Bennett and I took advantage of this rainy Friday and spent a couple hours at the Olympia Hands on Childrens Museum. I think a lot of other families had the same idea because it was pretty busy. Unfortunately almost all of the kiddos were older than Bennett and he was getting ran over quite a bit in the big kid sections. We spent most of our time at the toddler area. Bennett played with the boat of lentils, trains and the playdough. He met a few friends, some that like to share but most that didnt :) This place will be great when Bennett is a bit older.
We left the museum and got a bite to eat... just a Mama & Bennett day of fun... like most days :)

"Hat"

Bennett has been working a great deal on his language skills lately. He has successfully mastered a few signs including "more", "all done" and "book". His favorite and most over used sign is "more" he uses it along with yelling the "mmmm" sound if that is even possible. He expresses it to teachers, family and even people at the grocery store when they have something he wants... mostly food.
He has been using certain sounds lately that associate with the correct meaning. I say sounds because I am positive noone else would be able to differenciate these sounds from his normal babble. But I can hear "Dada", "Mama", "Doggie" and "Kitty". Even though he is a little bit behind we are so proud of him. It may be one of the most incredible parts of seeing him become the little person that he will be. Seeing him express himself successfully is amazing.
Today we had a fun new word... "Hat" He first said it at his speech therapy appointment this morning to our friend and speach therapist Nancy. He sure loved playing in Dada's hat tonight...

Our Newest Friend...

Our great friends Shannon, Andy & Hadley Block have a brand new addition to their family... Coen Andrew Block. He was born on his Mama's Birthday Saturday May 22nd at 7 lbs, 5 oz. He is absolutely adorable and quite a sweetheart just sleeping away his first few days. Bennett and I swung by to meet Coen and spend some time with one of Bennett's favorite gals, Hadley.
Hadley, such a sweet big sister
Bennett and Hadley... what a pair they are!

Being a Mama in the Moment...

One of my favortie Mamas and friend sent this to me in a forward... I know everyone hates those cheesy forwards but this one really hit home for me... and I know a lot of the mamas in my life would feel the same so I thought I would "forward" it on: (Sorry, not sure the writer or where it came from)

If not for the photographs, I might have a hard time believing they ever existed. The pensive infant with the swipe of dark bangs and the blackbutton eyes of a Raggedy Andy doll. The placid baby with the yellow ringlets and the high piping voice. The sturdy toddler with the lower lip that curled into an apostrophe above her chin. ALL MY BABIES are gone now.
I say this not in sorrow but in disbelief. I take great satisfaction in what I have today: three almost-adults, two taller than I am, one closing in fast. Three people who read the same books I do and have learned not to be afraid of disagreeing with me in their opinion of them, who sometimes tell vulgar jokes that make me laugh until I choke and cry, who need razor blades and shower gel and privacy, who want to keep their doors closed more than I like.
Who, miraculously, go to the bathroom, zip up their jackets and move food from plate to mouth all by themselves. Like the trick soap I bought for the bathroom with a rubber ducky at its center, the baby is buried deep within each, barely discernible except through the unreliable haze of the past.
Everything in all the books I once pored over is finished for me now. Penelope Leach., T. Berry Brazelton., Dr. Spock. The ones on sibling rivalry and sleeping through the night and early-childhood education, all grown obsolete.
Along with Goodnight Moon and Where the Wild Things Are, they are battered, spotted, well used. But I suspect that if you flipped the pages dust would rise like memories. What those books taught me, finally, and what the women on the playground taught me, and the well-meaning relations — what they taught me was that they couldn’t really teach me very much at all. Raising children is presented at first as a true-false test, then becomes multiple choice, until finally, far along, you realize that it is an endless essay. No one knows anything. One child responds well to positive reinforcement, another can be managed only with a stern voice and a timeout. One boy is toilet trained at 3, his brother at 2.
When my first child was born, parents were told to put baby to bed on his belly so that he would not choke on his own spit-up. By the time my last arrived, babies were put down on their backs because of research on sudden infant death syndrome. To a new parent this ever-shifting certainty is terrifying, and then soothing. Eventually you must learn to trust yourself. Eventually the research will follow.
I remember 15 years ago poring over one of Dr. Brazelton’s wonderful books on child development, in which he describes three different sorts of infants: average, quiet, and active. I was looking for a sub-quiet codicil for an 18-month-old who did not walk. Was there something wrong with his fat little legs? Was there something wrong with his tiny little mind? Was he developmentally delayed, physically challenged? Was I insane? Last year he went to China. Next year he goes to college. He can talk just fine. He can walk, too.
Every part of raising children is humbling, too. Believe me, mistakes were made. They have all been enshrined in the Remember-When-Mom-Did Hall of Fame. The outbursts, the temper tantrums, the bad language, mine, not theirs. The times the baby fell off the bed. The times I arrived late for preschool pickup. The nightmare sleepover. The horrible summer camp. The day when the youngest came barreling out of the classroom with a 98 on her geography test, and I responded, What did you get wrong? (She insisted I include that.) The time I ordered food at the McDonald’s drive-through speaker and then drove away without picking it up from the window. (They all insisted I include that.) I did not allow them to watch the Simpsons for the first two seasons. What was I thinking?
But the biggest mistake I made is the one that most of us make while doing this. I did not live in the moment enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of the three of them sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages 6, 4 and 1. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked bout, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night. I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less.
Even today I’m not sure what worked and what didn’t, what was me and what was simply life. When they were very small, I suppose I thought someday they would become who they were because of what I’d done. Now I suspect they simply grew into their true selves because they demanded in a thousand ways that I back off and let them be.
The books said to be relaxed and I was often tense, matter-of-fact and I was sometimes over the top. And look how it all turned out. I wound up with the three people I like best in the world, who have done more than anyone to excavate my essential humanity. That’s what the books never told me. I was bound and determined to learn from the experts. It just took me a while to figure out who the experts were.

Ever since I found out I was pregnant with Bennett I have been waiting for the next thing. I actually had little countdowns to each Ultrasound. Even when he was finally here I counted the days until I could bring him home from the hospital. Then when he got sick all I wanted was a happy healthy toddler, one that seemed "average" and in the hospital I would think "I can not wait until this time next year".

We had a white board in the nursery that counted down to each one of his surgeries and finally to his Trach removal. Since then things have become more "average" and I still catch myself thinking "I really wish he could listen better, I cant wait until he understands me and we can talk things through" or "I can't wait until this summer when we can go outside"

It is so easy to forget how wonderful right now is.... every day I am thankful for our little guy and I pray that I can memorize every second I spend with him ... right now.

Bennett reading to me, "blah blah blah, ya ya, nah, ba", Joel and I laugh that this is what we sound like to him too...

Throw the ball...

Hurlie has learned that Bennett will throw the ball for her. This is good news for all of us because she is a true lab that will drop a ball at your feet all day long. So both kids are completely entertained by this new game...
